MANILA - Prosecutors handling the plunder case of former Senator Jinggoy Estrada vowed to file a motion for reconsideration on the decision of the Sandiganbayan Special 5th Division allowing Estrada to post bail.
The prosecution was about to present three witnesses at the start of the plunder trial of Estrada on Monday but the proceeding was cancelled as only two out of three justices were present.
“May good grounds kami, so I hope ma-reverse 'yung kanyang pag-grant ng bail,” said Director Ma. Christina Batacan of the Office of the Special Prosecutor.
Estrada arrived at the Sandiganbayan without the usual police escorts as the court granted his request to post bail in a decision release last Friday.
He said his father, former President and incumbent Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada, and mother Dr. Loi Ejercito, were elated over the bail granted to him after three years in detention.
“Pinakamasayang weekend dahil nabuo ang aming pamilya. He was very, very happy, lalong-lalo na nanay ko,” said Estrada, who is facing plunder charges in relation to the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) scam.
He also said there was no deal with the Duterte administration that requires him to testify on the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) cases in exchange of his freedom.
Estrada was the one who revealed the alleged DAP anomalies, which was a program of the Aquino administration, during a privilege speech at the Senate.
The former senator also denied getting special treatment from the Sandiganbayan which processed his release on a Saturday.
“No. Ang balita ko dito sa Sandigabayan, meron laging justice on duty every Saturday,” Estrada said.
